Late Sunday afternoon. The owner is on the deck. Coffee has gone cold. The week ahead is already in the room. Two emails he hasn't sent. A conversation with his co-director he has rescheduled twice. A client matter on the senior associate's desk he should have read on Friday. He opens his laptop. Closes it. Walks inside. The chest tightens before the diary does. He tells himself it's the season. The market. The training load. By the time he goes to bed, the Monday he has invented is heavier than the Monday that will arrive. He sleeps poorly. He shows up tired. The week he was dreading begins on time.
Pattern
Pre-Week Loading. The owner carries the structure of the coming week in the body before it appears in the diary. Open loops register through the nervous system on the day the calendar empties; conversations not had, decisions not made, documents not finalised, partners not confronted. The signal is reliable. The interpretation usually is not. Owners label it mood, age, sleep, weather. The label keeps the structural cause out of view.
Analysis
Framework: Assess → Align → Act
Assess. List the four most recent Sundays that carried weight. For each, name the first task that came to mind on Monday morning and the conversation or decision being avoided behind it. Three of four Sundays pointing to the same item is the answer.
Align. Take the repeated item. Test it against three commercial questions. What is the cost of leaving it another quarter? Who else inside the firm carries the consequence? What changes if it is settled in thirty days? Honest answers separate a structural break from passing pressure.
Act. Write a one-page note titled The Avoided Conversation. State what the conversation is, who it is with, what outcome you would accept, and what outcome you will not. Date it. Schedule the conversation inside fourteen days. Review the note before the conversation, not after.
Tool
The Sunday Test
If the same item has carried weight on three of the last four Sundays, the problem is structural, not seasonal.
Why It Matters
Owners pay for delay in cash and in capacity. The Sunday weight is the invoice arriving early. Ignoring it does not reduce the bill. It moves the cost from a private conversation now to a documented dispute later. The firms that move through transitions cleanly are run by owners who treat the Sunday signal as data.
This goes out on LinkedIn. If you'd rather it came directly to you, sign up here. I'd prefer that too.

Open a blank document tonight. Title it The Avoided Conversation, name what you are avoiding, and date it.
